Dynamic Spine Calculator

Hello All!

Welcome to the Dynamic Spine Calculator download page.  This calculator was developed to aid the traditional archer in defining the appropriate arrow setup to match a given bow design.  That formulas are derived primarily from modern deflex/reflex longbow and recurve designs based on actual shooting experience coupled with basic engineering principles.  The goal here is to provide a “simple to use” tool that will provide a good starting point for which the archer can simply fine tune his bow to get excellent arrow flight.  Hopefully this will save time, money, and the inevitable frustration that plaques the beginning archer when attempting to tune a new bow & arrow combination.

There is a complete set of numbered instructions that correlate to the needed inputs included in the spreadsheet.  There are also some tips included to help the journey along.

Feel free to email me directly at: hkg3sg1@sbcglobal.net with any questions and I will be happy to help wherever possible.  Constructive criticism and suggestions for continuous improvement are also always welcome!

 Have fun and shoot straight,

-Stu Miller

Newest Release

 Dynamic Spine Calculator! (rev 7-18-10)

Here is a summary of the additions in this version:

  1. Added "Personal Form Factor" to be used as a calibration to your individual shooting style
  2. Easton 2020 shaft deflection changed to 0.426"
  3. Added new Easton arrows into the database (the new Carbon One series)
  4. Added "Additional Reference Information" page to the end of the Instruction Sheet.  Good useful info here!

The Personal Form Factor (PFF) is the main change point.  Here is the description directly form the instruction sheet:

The personal form fact is a way to calibrate the DSC to your own shooting style and release.  To use it simply enter accurate info about an arrow setup that has been proven to work well for you and then enter you bows info as usual.  I recommend bare shaft testing for point of impact relative to fletched shafts for final confirmation of correct flight.  With that done you now simply enter a number (ranging from -15 to +15) until the bow required dynamic matches your good shooting arrows dynamic spine. Now that you have found your Personal Form Factor you simply leave it in place when changing to new arrows or bow.  If you are new to trad archery, your form and style will change over the first years.  The PFF will provide a way for the DSC to change right along with you....I may even be fun to watch the numbers drop as you form and release improves!

For the vast majority of archers using a default "0" setting will remain accurate and the results will be the exact same as the previous version.

I hope you find the new changes to be of value.  As always, constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated.
